Forensic treatment, assessments and reports
We accept enquiries from individuals, lawyers and other referrers about adult forensic treatment, independent assessment and reports for legal or professional-board matters.
Forensic treatment
Enquiries about psychological treatment, including offence-specific treatment. Treatment is distinct from an independent assessment for a legal proceeding.
Independent assessment or report
Enquiries about the assessment or report required, the questions it needs to address and any relevant deadline. Scope and timing are confirmed after referral review.
For an initial enquiry, tell us which service you need and whether there is a deadline. We will confirm suitability, the appropriate clinician, scope, fees and timing after reviewing the referral.
Please leave confidential case details and documents out of the initial enquiry form. Reception will explain how to provide any records needed for review.
We aim to respond within one business day. Submitting an enquiry does not confirm an appointment or acceptance of a report deadline.
Other assessments and clinical referrals
For cognitive or neurodevelopmental diagnostic assessments, contact reception to discuss referral requirements. GPs and other health professionals can continue to use the clinical referral guidance on this page. For a therapy appointment, enquire about therapy.
Process for referring GPs
Step 1: Create a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) for the patient. The MHTP must stipulate a specific number of sessions with a maximum of 6 sessions as the initial course of treatment.
Medicare will fund a total of 10 sessions under the Better Access initiative per calendar year.
Step 2: Send a referral letter and MHTP to referrals@melbourneprivatepsychology.com.au or fax to (03) 9958 5609 with details regarding:
Contact details for the patient, including their name and email/phone.
The reason for the referral.
The number of sessions approved under the Medicare scheme.
Once your referral has been received, we will attempt to make contact with your patient as soon as possible to arrange an appointment. We will seek to respond within 1 business day.
Step 3: At the conclusion of the initial course of treatment, if further treatment is needed, our Psychologist will write to you to request for a re-referral/further sessions. You can then provide a Referral Letter to our Psychologist specifying the further treatment needed. A new MHTP is not needed unless there is a change in condition.

Any details which might impact whether the client is suitable for our service, such as language barriers, intellectual impairment, and current substance use.
